The process of making a miniature collage is similar to any other work of art. First step is the idea. I usually draw several compositions to express the idea, then I draw it on Ivorine. Ivorine is a semi transparent synthetic material which replace Ivory that was used in the past for miniature paintings.
I color my drawing with colored papers. I have a big collection of hand made papers, very thin transparent papers, papers with different textures and designs. This type of paper is very strong and durable.
The collage is made out of many tiny pieces of paper glued in layers, some are cut by scissors to get hard edges and some are freely turn out in order to keep the texture of the natural fibers inside the paper.
While gluing the paper the underneath drawing is covered, so I keep in frot of me the preliminary drawing that I made.
Since the work is made on a very small space, sometimes it is necessary to work under magnifying glass and use tweezers.
It is a very long process. I am often asked how long it takes to create a miniature, as a matter of fact I never measured the time, it takes as much as needed, when it seems "finished", I put it aside for some time and look at it again in "fresh eyes" to make sure that I am pleased.
